Abstract:
【Objective】The purpose of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and genetic progress of body weight and average daily gain of a new Qinchuan cattle line (hereinafter referred to as Qinchuan beef cattle) at different stages of breeding populations in past 10 years in the experiment farm of the National Beef Cattle Improvement Center from 2013 to 2021.【Method】Data of 440 Qinchuan beef cattle were collected and a general linear model was used to analyze the impact of three fixed effects (gender, birth year and birth season) on phenotypic values of body weight and average daily gain of Qinchuan beef cattle at different stages. In conjunction with pedigree data, the ASReml-R multi-trait animal model was used to estimate the variance components for phenotype values, breeding values and residuals of body weight and average daily gain of Qinchuan beef cattle at different stages, calculate heritability, phenotype correlation coefficients and genetic correlation coefficients, and estimate genetic progress.【Result】The fixed effects (gender effect, birth year effect and birth season effect) had significant or extremely significant impacts on phenotype values of body weight and average daily gain of Qinchuan beef cattle at different stages. There were positive genetic correlations between body weight traits and daily weight gain traits of Qinchuan beef cattle at each stage. With the passage of years, the phenotypic values of body weight and daily gain of Qinchuan beef cattle at various stages showed same upward trends, while the breeding value showed fluctuating upward trends. The estimated heritability values for birth weight,6-month weight,12-month weight,18-month weight and 24-month weight were 0.45,0.45,0.48,0.53 and 0.34,and mean genetic gain values were 0.53,3.15,0.17,4.76 and 3.50 kg per cow, respectively. The estimated heritability values of average daily gain during birth to six months,6-12 months,12-18 months, and 18-24 months were 0.46,0.59,0.24 and 0.39,and average genetic gain values were 0.010 0,0.004 0,0.006 0 and 0.002 3 kg per cow, respectively.【Conclusion】The genetic progress of weight traits in Qinchuan beef cattle at each month was similar to that in Chinese Simmental cattle, while there was still a gap in genetic progress of daily weight gain traits, indicating significant breeding effectiveness.
