Abstract:
【 Objective】The study aims to investigate the allelopathic effects of Artemisia desertorum secondary metabolites, elucidating its ecological interactions with associated species and its effective utilization in vegetation restoration.【Method】A.desertorum was used as the donor plant. Three associated species, namely Chenopodium album L. ,Chloris virgata Sw.and Halogeton glomeratus, were selected as recipient plants. The responses in seed germination, seedling growth, and physiological indicators of these three species were examined under different concentrations of A.desertorum aqueous extract(5,25,50,and 100 mg/L).【Result】The seed germination rates of the three recipient plants all decreased with increasing extract concentration, but the extent of response varied. The germination stage was more sensitive to allelopathic substances than the seedling growth stage, with C.album L. showing the highest sensitivity-completely unable to germinate at an extract con?centration of 100 mg/L. In contrast,C.virgata Sw. exhibited the lowest germination index at 100 mg/L (19.91% germination rate),while H.glomeratus was less affected by low concentrations, maintaining a rela?tively high germination rate(49.34%) at 100 mg/L. The inhibition by the extract was greater on germination rate than on germination speed, and stronger on root length and root dry mass than on shoot height and shoot dry mass. With increasing extract concentration, relative electrical conductivity (REC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the three species increased, while chlorophyll content decreased. However, sensitivities dif?fered among species.C.album L. consistently exhibited higher REC compared to the control across all concen?trations, whereas C.virgata Sw. and H.glomeratus showed significant REC elevation only at high concentra?tions. The increase in MDA content was significantly greater in C.virgata Sw. and H.glomeratus than in C.album L.【Conclusion】The allelopathic inhibition of water extract from A.desertorum on seed germination and seedling growth of the three associated plants followed the order:C.album L.>C.virgata Sw.>H.glomeratus.This allelopathic inhibition by A.desertorum extract was concentration-dependent and species-specific. The mechanism might involve the induction of membrane lipid peroxidation, cell membrane damage, and the suppres?sion of photosynthesis in the recipient plants.
