Abstract:
【 Objective】This research aims to investigate the dynamic effects of different thinning intensities on understory vegetation diversity and soil properties,to provide a scientific basis for the effective management of forests and the conservation of forest biodiversity.【Method】In this study, five thinning intensities(no thin?ning, thinning intensity of 15%,30%,45% and 60%) were conducted in secondary forest communities in the Qinling Mountains to observe the dynamic changes in understory vegetation diversity and soil properties at three thinning periods(before thinning,4 years after thinning, and 8 years after thinning),and to analyze the correla? tion between understory vegetation diversity and soil properties.【Result】① Under different thinning intensities, the highest species richness of the shrub layer and herb layer was observed 4 years after thinning. Compared with other thinning treatments, the 60% thinning treatment showed the highest increment in species richness after thinning. The dominant species in the shrub and herb layers of the Qinling secondary forest changed significantly 4 and 8 years after thinning, compared with those before thinning. ② Except for the Margalef richness index of herb plants 8 years after thinning, there were no significant differences in the four diversity indices(Margalef richness index,Simpson dominance index,Shannon-Wiener diversity index, and Pielou evenness index) of shrub and plant plants among different thinning intensities at three thinning periods(P>0. 05). ③ In the 0?20 cm soil layer, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus content generally decreased 4 years after thinning and generally increased 8 years after thinning. ④ The Margalef richness index,Simpson dominance index, and Shannon-Wiener diversity index of herb plants were significantly or extremely significantly positively correlated with soil C∶N.【Conclusion】In the short term after thinning(4 years after thinning),the number of understory vegetation species increased, indicating a positive impact on vegetation diversity. However,a recovery in soil nutrient level was observed 8 years after thinning, although the number of vegetation species decreased, with the 60% thinning intensity showing a more pronounced effect on in?creasing the number of understory vegetation species and restoring soil nutrients.
